- Shaded Canal Towpath
Departing Toulouse ride the Canal du Midi shaded towpath passing plane trees stone bridges and quiet locks as urban edges quickly give way to countryside.
- Bram's circular medieval plan is best seen on a map before arrival — one of the only perfectly round medieval villages in France. From the canal you will see the church tower. An 800m detour into the village shows the radial street layout; worth taking for curious riders.
Near Montgiscard and Avignonet Lauragais the canal opens to broader skies with long straight sections wind swept fields and views across the Lauragais landscape.
Tonight: Castelnaudary
Castelnaudary is widely regarded as the birthplace of cassoulet, the rich bean and meat stew that defines regional cuisine. Legend claims the dish sustained locals during a medieval siege, symbolizing resilience. Positioned along the Canal du Midi, the town became an important waypoint for trade and transport. Its Grand Bassin remains one of the canal’s largest water expanses. Castelnaudary’s identity is deeply tied to food culture, slow travel, and the enduring rhythms of southwestern France.
