Toulouse has been shaped by trade, law and flight. In the 15th and 16th centuries, merchants made fortunes from pastel, the plant dye used for blue cloth, and spent some of that wealth on large brick houses. The Parlement of Toulouse made the city a major seat of law. The Canal du Midi began here in the 17th century. In the 20th, aircraft makers and Aéropostale laid the base for the aerospace industry that followed.
