Moissac changed course in 1047 when its Abbey of Saint-Pierre joined the Cluniac network. The link brought reform, wealth and wider ties to one of the strongest monastic orders in western Europe. Pope Urban II visited in 1097, and the cloister was complete by about 1100. Pilgrims bound for Santiago also passed through the town. War, floods and rail works damaged parts of the abbey, but enough remains to show how much power sat here.
