La Réole grew around a Benedictine priory founded or restored in 977. Its name comes from regula, the Latin word for the monastic rule followed there. The town’s high ground above the Garonne also gave it military value. During the War of Saint-Sardos in 1324, French forces moved into English-held Aquitaine and La Réole became a key point in the fight. Its decline spared much of the old church and civic fabric that survives today.
